Although you an alignment isn’t a must have, it’s a good idea. Most tire installers will ask you if you are interested including it in with your new tires. This is because they know that a properly aligned car with new tires drives better and, tires on a properly aligned car will last longer.
How Do I Know if I Should Get an Alignment?
Ask your trusted mechanic. If you don’t have one you know and trust and are just using a tire shop for your new tires, here are some things to consider before you decide on an alignment with your new tires.
- Wear on your existing tires – if you noticed that one tire or pair of tires (same side or just the front or back) are more worn than the other, you may have an issue.
- You frequently drive on streets filled with potholes – The more you bump over potholes, the more likely you are to throw your car out of alignment, especially if you do so at any speed.
- It’s been longer than your vehicle manufacturer recommends – It’s never bad to check your car’s alignment about once a year, however, your manufacturer likely included a recommendation in their manual as to the frequency of alignments.
Why You Should Get Regular Alignments
Even if you don’t need new tires, you should be getting your car aligned regularly per your vehicle’s recommendations. A properly aligned car will:
- Get better gas mileage
- Drive better
- Have tires that last longer
And like any recommended maintenance, properly aligned cars are safer to drive than those not maintained.
