Most car owners know that they need to maintain their car’s fluids and most know that transmission fluid is one of the most important ones. However, not everyone realizes there’s a difference between replacing your transmission fluid and a transmission fluid flush. You can replace your transmission fluid, but chances are slim that you have the technology to flush your transmission fluid at home. Flushing it is the only way to truly clean out your transmission and ensure your car will operate efficiently and smoothly over time.
Transmission Fluid Has a Big Job
Your transmission is an essential element of your car. Its fluid is both a lubricant and coolant. As a lubricant, it lowers the friction within the transmission and helps various elements within last longer by preventing wear and corrosion. The cooler the transmission runs, the less wear and tear, and your transmission fluid helps with that.
A Fluid Change and a Transmission Flush Are Different
Although there may be a time when a fluid change is the right option, more often, we recommend a transmission flush. A transmission flush uses high pressure to remove not only all the fluid from the transmission but also inside the torque converter. Any contaminants that may not come out by simply draining the old fluid are removed during a transmission flush. Plus, you’ll be sure that you’re truly replacing all the old fluid. A transmission flush costs roughly twice as much as a fluid change.
Know Your Fluid
In a previous article, we helped people identify their fluids and understand what color your fluids should be. New transmission fluid is red. As it ages it turns darker and into brown or even black. A light brown fluid is still ok but you should begin to watch it closely and schedule a flush or change before it turns too dark brown.
Does Your Car Need a Transmission Flush?
