Signs Your Car May Need Transmission Repair

Your transmission is arguably one of the most important parts of your car’s engine. If you know the signs that you need transmission repair, you can usually tell when there’s a problem. Here are some of the most common signs you should call your mechanic for a transmission check ASAP.
1. Reddish or Pink Fluid Under Your Car
This is a sure sign you have a transmission leak. Without the right amount of fluid in your transmission, it can’t operate properly.
2. Clunking Sound or Jerking Feeling When Shifting
This applies to both manual and automatic transmissions, the only difference is if you’re doing the shifting or the car itself. If you feel the car jerk when it’s changing gears or an unusual clunk during the shifting process, you definitely need transmission repair.
3. Check Engine Light
Although some manufacturers have an actual transmission warning light, most car’s systems trip the check engine light when there’s transmission trouble. It should go without saying that anytime your check engine light is on that you should head to your mechanic.
4. Burning Smell
Although the presence of a burning smell doesn’t always point to the transmission, it’s a fairly common reason. If you know you haven’t spilled oil or another fluid on your engine recently, chances are high that the burning smell is your transmission fluid overheating which requires attention.
5. Unusual Sounds, Especially in Neutral
This is often a sign of an issue with an automatic transmission. Often unusual sounds like grinding, whirring or whining in neutral are accompanied by delayed or rough shifting while driving. This can be especially dangerous when traveling at high speeds or attempting to accelerate rapidly.
