There was a time when all cars had a big muffler out the back of the car. Even then, your exhaust system was more than just a muffler. Today’s exhaust systems are more complex than ever and less visible, which often means that exhaust issues aren’t noticed or paid attention to as readily. However, once you understand all that your exhaust system does, you will see its importance and never neglect any of the warning signs that there may be an issue.
What It Is and Does
The original purpose of an exhaust system was to direct the exhaust gases to the rear of the car. Now it does much more, including cleaning the exhaust to reduce harmful emissions. You’ll also find that when you have exhaust issues, your car is nosier than when it’s operating properly. Although there are many components of your exhaust system, the primary ones include:
- Catalytic converter
- Muffler & tail pipe
- Heat shields
- Exhaust manifolds & pipes
Signs of Exhaust System Issues
Your check engine light may come with exhaust issues, but there are other signs you may notice that can indicate something is wrong with your exhaust system. A change in the color of your car’s exhaust is a big one (it shouldn’t have a color) and may indicate not only an issue with your exhaust system but also other components. If your fuel mileage decreases or you smell gas in your car, go see your local mechanic because you have an issue somewhere in your vehicle.
It’s also common to have rattling or vibrating coming from the rear of the car. This is a sign there’s an issue which can range from a cracked or broken pipe to a loose bolt holding your exhaust pipe up. Don’t let an odd sound or vibration linger as it can get worse leading to a more expensive repair.
