Are you suddenly noticing your car’s exhaust? If you are, you might have a problem. Your car’s exhaust shouldn’t be black, blue, grey or have a sweet smell. All these are signs you should go see your Oldsmar mechanic for a check of your engine and exhaust system. Here are some possible reasons your exhaust smoke may be one of these colors.
Black or Dark Grey
Some people think that puffs of dark smoke are cool and they modify their engine to emit this unsightly smoke. However, it’s not normal and you should contact your mechanic sooner rather than later if you’re noticing a cloud of dark smoke following you. It often means your car is burning too much fuel so if you also notice reduced fuel mileage, head to your Oldsmar mechanic for a checkup.
White or Light Grey
Just because your exhaust is only a light grey doesn’t mean you don’t have a serious problem. If you notice a sweet smell along with the light grey smoke, it’s likely you have an issue with a head gasket. If your engine is also running hot, don’t take chances of being stranded, get it checked out right away.
Blue or Medium Grey
Have you had your check oil light on lately and checked it and realized it’s low and are now noticing a bluish tinged smoke coming from your exhaust? It’s likely you have an oil leak that needs attending to. As you’re heading to your Oldsmar mechanic, try to notice if there is more smoke when you accelerate or decelerate as both signal different issues and that information would be helpful to your mechanic.
What is Normal?
It’s normal for you to not even be able to see your exhaust. Some water vapor, especially when you first start your car, is also normal (think about how the air looks when you first open your shower door after a hot shower in your cool home).
